Tools from R+W for underwater vehicles and robots

Working underwater presents a wide variety of challenges. Devices used in this situation must be extremely robust, with high material resistance, but they must also work very precisely.

One thing that we can guarantee is that R+W precision safety couplings are reliable devices in these environments.

They perform with high stiffness and zero backlash, and deliver rapid separation between the driving and driven ends when a preset torque is exceeded.

A leading manufacturer of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) for the oil and gas industry fully relies on the SK1 series safety couplings. The SK1 is installed in an automated mechanical torque tool in an ROV which works down to extreme depths. The torque limiter is used to unlock the external arm, which in turn has the task of opening, closing, and repairing oil valves in deep water.

With the help of three different disengagement torque adjustment ranges available in the safety coupling, the customer covers a wide range of torques and is thus equipped for all requirements.

Technical data of the coupling:

  • Coupling type: SK1/150
  • Total length: 58 mm
  • Shaft fit length: 32 mm
  • Mass: approx. 1.3 kg

Adjustment ranges:

20 – 70 Nm
5 – 150 Nm
80 – 225 Nm
